During Orazio Gentileschi’s stay in London at the court of King Charles I, he produced eleven easel paintings in the Royal Collection, nine ceiling paintings in the Queen’s House in Greenwich – now Marlborough House – for Queen Henrietta Maria, sister of Louis XIII, and canvases for George Villiers, first Duke of Buckingham, the king’s favorite, who brought Gentileschi into his household. It was during this period that Gentileschi painted Joseph and Potiphar’s Wife.  His network of patronage began when he, as one of Caravaggio’s most important students, executed splendid public ecclesiastical projects in Rome, Genoa and then in Paris.  His works are imbued with classicism, tempered by a warm, satisfying palette.
